Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Bates began her formal Pat Martin Bates book studies at the age of 12 with Stanley Royale, who taught at Mount Allison subsequently studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium, at the Sorbonne in Paris, and at the Pratt Graphic Centre Alma mater: Mount Allison University.

Pat Martin Bates: Balancing on a Thread Patricia Bovey, Frontenac House “I can’t remember a time when I did not have a pencil or crayon in my hand,” says Pat Martin Bates. “Whenever anything bothered me I could always turn inward to my art.”.
Patricia Martin Bates. Pat Martin Bates was born in in St. John, New Brunswick. At the age of 12 she began art classes under Professor Stanley Royle at Mount Allison University.
In she completed a Fine Arts diploma with honors at the Royal Academie des Beaux Arts in Belgium, and over the next several years went on to graduate studies. Pat Martin Bates (or PMB as she’s known) says the figurine evokes joy and melancholy, reminding her of her doting father who died when Pat was eight.
There are many stories about him in her book, It is I, Patricia: An Artist’s Childhood (Hedgerow Press, ). Her father, she says, once kept the figurine by his bed and put his watch in it. About the Author(s) Robert Amos has published eight books on art, including E. J. Hughes Paints British Columbia and E. J. Hughes Paints Vancouver Island, and was the arts columnist for Victoria’s Times Colonist newspaper for more than thirty years.
Amos was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in and is an Honorary Citizen of Victoria. He lives in Oak Bay, British.
